How Do You Stop Customers Cheating a Digital Loyalty Card?

Worried customers will add their own stamps or claim rewards they have not earned? The key is keeping stamp issuance under the business’s control rather than the customer’s.

One of the first questions businesses ask about digital loyalty is obvious: what stops a customer simply giving themselves extra stamps?

The answer is that a useful digital loyalty system should not trust the customer to decide when a stamp has been earned. Stamp issuance needs to stay under the business’s control.

Do not make the customer’s card the stamping tool

A weak digital system can amount to little more than a web page with buttons. If the customer can reach the control that increments their own balance, the programme is relying on honesty rather than control.

With Loytu, the customer’s card identifies the card to the business. The business then uses Loytu to issue the stamp after confirming that the qualifying visit or purchase has taken place.

Treat a stamp like a tiny transaction

A stamp has value because it moves the customer towards a reward. It should therefore be issued deliberately, just like applying a discount or recording a payment.

The staff member should identify the correct customer card, check the purchase or appointment qualifies, and then issue the correct number of stamps.

Keep the earning rule simple

Complicated rules create mistakes that can look like cheating. If one service earns one stamp, another earns two, discounted bookings earn half and Tuesday purchases work differently, staff will eventually issue the wrong amount.

A clear rule such as 'one stamp per completed qualifying appointment' is easier to enforce and easier to explain.

Make reward redemption a business action too

Customers should be able to see what they have earned, but the business should record the actual redemption. That prevents a customer simply declaring a reward used or unused whenever it suits them.

When a reward is presented, check the card in Loytu and record the redemption as part of providing the reward.

What about screenshots or copied QR codes?

A screenshot or copied code should never be treated as proof that a purchase happened. The card is only the identifier used to find the loyalty record; the business still decides whether the real-world transaction qualifies for a stamp.

If something looks unusual, do not issue the stamp until you are comfortable that the visit, purchase and card are legitimate.

No loyalty system eliminates every possible dispute

Digital does not remove the need for sensible business rules. Staff can still make mistakes, customers can still misunderstand an offer and edge cases still need judgement.

The important difference is that the customer is not handed the control that creates value. Keep issuing stamps and redeeming rewards on the business side, and most obvious forms of self-stamping disappear.
